Although this blog is mostly intended for PC gamers whose mouse and keyboard you can take only from their cold, dead hands, once in a while, everyone gets bored of it. Especially if you are like me, and your work includes using a mouse and keyboard for the entire day, sometimes, it is a nice change to take a gamepad and relax with a good game. Cheap PC gamepads do exist, but are they any good?

Best PC gamepads on the market are definitely Play Station and Xbox controllers, but they are not very affordable and I don’t think it is a good investment to pay 50$ or more for a gamepad that you will use maybe once a week. The most popular games on PC can’t be played with a controller anyway.

I had an opportunity to play with both cheap controllers and expensive ones, including PS1, PS2, and PS4. If you don’t need fancy features like wireless or touchpad on the controller and vibration, you will be perfectly happy with a gamepad that is 40$ cheaper.

How to pick a perfect cheap PC gamepad

Before buying, ask your self, what features do you find necessary for your gamepad to have:

  • Wireless
  • Analog sticks
  • Analog triggers
  • Vibration

Wireless

When buying a cheap controller with wireless, be careful about what kind of wireless technology it uses. Make sure it is using 2.4 GHz connection or at least Bluetooth that is 4.0 or newer because older versions of Bluetooth have huge latency which can make games unplayable, and whole experience horrible, especially if you are a hardcore player.

Analog sticks

Have in mind that you will never be able to move the camera or aim with a controller as good as with a mouse, but analog sticks definitely help A LOT. If you only wish to play retro games, you might be fine without analog sticks, but later you might want to play some 3d game. This is a feature I definitely wouldn’t skip.

Analog triggers

Useful for racing games that support it and maybe something else, but honestly nothing crosses my mind, feel free to skip this if you aren’t into racing simulators.

Vibration

Some people say that it makes games more immersive, for me, it’s not that important, but everyone has their own preferences.

Top 5 cheap PC gamepads

1. Cewaal Wired USB Gamepad

Cewaal Wired USB PC Gamepad
Super affordable, beautiful PS3 looking controller. It connects through USB so you won’t ever have to worry about battery life or have to charge it. The cable is 150cm which was always enough for me, but if you need a longer cable, you can always buy a USB extension cable. Buttons feel great and analog sticks are very useful in 3D games. It is a bit smaller for my huge hands and I felt a bit disappointed when it arrived, but I got used to it after only a few days and now I wouldn’t change it for any other.

I bought it 3 years ago and it still works perfectly fine, but even if it broke, it is easily fixable. It only has a couple of screws holding it together.

In my opinion, this is the perfect cheap gamepad, it has everything that I want in a gamepad and it looks great. Also, build quality is awesome, it’s basically indestructible. You won’t find a better controller under 10$.

Pros:

  • Price
  • No batteries
  • Analog sticks
  • No drivers
  • Build quality

Cons:

  • Not compatible with Android
