A Plague Tale: Innocence is an action-adventure stealth game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game has a very straightforward tearjerker plot, easy to understand controls, and some of the scariest enemies.
You start off as Amicia de Rune, a young noblewoman living her best life with the family. While outing with your father bad things start happening. First your dog is pulled into the ground and killed by something and second the Inquisition is after your younger brother, Hugo de Rune.
Your mother helps you escape the homestead and gives you the assignment of searching for an alchemist called Laurentius.
Escaping from the Inquisition in search for Laurentius leads our two siblings through a Plague-full village. After finding a lead on Laurentius’ farm, we meet the constant danger of this game, rats. Now in danger from both the rats and the Inquisition, finding the reason why they all seem to want Hugo, dealing with a loss of a parent, finding and losing friends, we are taxed with the future of the world.
For the majority of the game, combat is avoided and instead, players are incentivised to utilize stealth to avoid hostile encounters.
Amicia is equipped with a sling which can throw rocks to break down chains or stun Inquisition guards long enough for the rats to ambush them, or even kill them with a well placed rock headshot. The sling itself can be upgraded on special work tables.
The game is played out in a series of survival puzzles, mostly consisting of methods to scare away or distract the hordes of hungry rats in order to gain access to new areas, or direct them towards murderous knights. The main method of scaring rats off is fire, as rats will seldom enter within a radius of burning torches and braziers.
Wrapping up, I have to say that I really enjoyed A Plague Tale: Innocence and highly recommend that you check it out, especially on PC, as it is a stunning game with a solid storyline and some of the most amazing character development arcs I have seen in recent years.
